Academic Environment/Didactics

  • Weekly Didactics
Residents have a full protected day dedicated to didactics each week, free of clinical responsibilities, currently scheduled for Thursdays. Sessions include case conferences, journal clubs, board review, psychotherapy seminars, and interdisciplinary learning modules.
  • Rich Psychotherapy Experience
Residents receive structured training and supervision in multiple therapeutic modalities. During ambulatory clinic rotations, you will engage in both cognitive-behavioral therapy and psychodynamic therapy under the guidance of attending psychiatrists who have specialized expertise in these approaches.
  • TMS and ECT Training
We currently offer Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation in our outpatient practices, allowing residents to gain direct experience. We are in the process of adding Electroconvulsive Therapy to our available services. If ECT is not in place by the time residents need this experience, we will ensure alternative arrangements—such as offsite rotations so every resident fulfills training requirements.
  • Divers Patient Population
Residents train with diverse populations across all psychiatry settings. Diagnoses span mood, anxiety, psychotic, substance use, and personality disorders. Patients come from varied cultural, socioeconomic, and demographic backgrounds, enriching residents’ multicultural psychiatry experience.
  • PI/QI Projects and Committees
Residents can lead committees, develop QI projects, and participate in teaching initiatives. Each resident will complete at least one QI or scholarly project by graduation, with opportunities for institutional presentations.
  • GME Research Day
While the institution is not primarily research-focused, residents are encouraged and supported in pursuing academic projects. Each year, Capital Health hosts a system-wide GME Research Day featuring research, posters and oral presentations. Our psychiatry residents, along with medical students rotating in our program, will present at regional and national conferences across the country.
