Workflow

Electronic Medical Record (EMR) System

Residents train on Cerner, the same EMR used across Capital Health facilities. Onboarding includes detailed EMR training and ongoing IT support to streamline clinical documentation and patient care. Athena is the outpatient EMR system.

Call Schedule

In the first and second years, residents can expect 5–7 weekend calls annually. During the third and fourth years, residents take on supervisory call responsibilities, which vary depending on the total number of residents in the program at the time. Senior residents focus more on guidance and oversight.

Golden Weekends

Residents will have regular golden weekends, and in fact, most weekends will be free of call duties, ensuring adequate rest and personal time.

Inpatient vs Outpatient Settings

Training begins with core inpatient and emergency psychiatry experiences in PGY-1 and transitions to predominantly outpatient work by PGY-3. Residents complete consult-liaison, emergency, and specialty rotations each year for comprehensive exposure.

Mentorship/Supervision Model

Each resident is paired with a dedicated faculty advisor at the start of training. Mentors will meet regularly to discuss academic progress, career development, and wellness. Additional research and elective mentors are assigned based on resident interests. Residents will work directly with faculty attendings as well as outside rotating PGY2 and PGY4 residents when on psychiatry rotations. While on other rotations they will be a part of the residency teams across GME.

Teaching Opportunities

Residents will work closely with medical students from Rutgers, Rowan, and Drexel University, offering rich opportunities for clinical teaching, supervision, and mentoring. As the program grows, senior residents will have increasing roles in shaping the educational experience of junior residents and students. Residents will also have an opportunity to teach internal medicine residents as well as other disciplines.

Moonlighting

Moonlighting is permitted beginning in PGY-3, provided residents maintain satisfactory performance and duty-hour compliance. All moonlighting must be approved by the Program Director and GME office.
