Preparing Your Body for Surgery

Getting your home ready is a good start but it is just as important to make a few lifestyle changes to help provide a better outcome for your surgery.

  • Reduce or quit smoking.
  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Eat a well balanced diet.
  • Follow the exercise program given to you by your physical therapist.
  • Schedule a dental visit if not done so in the past year.
  • Do not shave your legs at least 10 days prior to surgery.

Sometimes a blood transfusion is needed during or after surgery. You can donate your own blood. If this is something that you are interested in doing, please speak with your surgeon about when the appropriate time would be donate and where you should schedule your donation. Donations are usually done a few weeks prior to your surgery and take about 30-45 minutes to complete.
