After Your Surgery

After you’re brought to the surgical care unit, you will notice some new equipment which is used for different functions after your surgery. This equipment could include oxygen, an IV in your hand or arm, an incentive spirometer, compression stockings, sequential compression devices (SCDs), a Foley catheter, and a wound drain. Ask your nurse if you have any questions about the purpose or function of these pieces of equipment.

Your incision will have staples covered by a dressing. The dressing will first be changed by the surgeon or an assistant. The staples will be removed about two weeks after surgery.
