Pharmacy Residency Program

Statement from the Program Directors

Capital Health Pharmacy Department celebrated the ASHP accreditation of our PGY1 residency program in September of 2012. We aggressively pursued accreditation in the shortest timeframe possible after initiating our program in July of 2011. Our program has evolved significantly since 2011 and we have continually found ways to improve the opportunities offered to the residents within our program. We expanded our program with the addition of a PGY2 program in Pharmacotherapy, which has now been converted to a Critical Care specialty to align closer with our most robust pharmacy clinical services. As stated in our mission statement, we strive to prepare our residents to practice in a variety of settings post-graduation and have the ability to structure individuality within our program to aid our residents in taking the next step towards accomplishing their future goals.

Our program is structured to offer a core curriculum of experiential rotations, including longitudinal activities, with ample opportunity to choose elective experiences as desired. The pharmacy department and specifically the residency program are part of a culture of teaching and learning at Capital Health that integrates with other disciplines throughout the institution. Capital Health Pharmacy Department is dedicated to giving back to the profession of pharmacy via the training of the future of pharmacy. Capital Health preceptors train residents, as well as pharmacy students from various pharmacy schools. It is this experience that has allowed our pharmacists to become versatile in our abilities to provide appropriately diverse training to students and residents at different stages of experience.

This dynamic environment allows the resident to develop a skill set as they balance between learning and teaching throughout the year. Our residents are challenged to accept numerous responsibilities at Capital Health, and it is expected that each challenge becomes another building block or tool for future use. We stress the concept of skill building beyond clinical education and are particularly proud of the confident leaders we have trained. As you transition to residency, you will find the bar to be raised higher. You may consider doing a residency a daunting proposition. At Capital Health, we accept the responsibility of pushing our residents to blow past their perceived limits and work beyond their comfort zones to get the absolute most out of their year. While evaluations and feedback are staples of any learning experience, residency is different in that there is no “grade” for anything. Your transcript is the skills you build. There is no limit on how much you can learn.

Capital Health is proud to offer residency positions to pharmacy learners and work with future colleagues who are driven and willing to push themselves to meet their future goals. How good do you want to be?

We encourage those who share our vision of teaching and learning to contact us and consider if Capital Health is the place for you. We wish you the best of luck during this exciting time in your life and invite you to contact us with any questions you have.

Sincerely,
Doug St John, Pharm.D, BCPS
