Health Equity at Capital Health

The well-being of any community is built on a foundation of good health. Recognizing our role as an anchor institution in the region, Capital Health and its community partners are finding solutions to ensure greater health equity for all residents of Mercer, Bucks, and Burlington counties. Through collaboration between health care providers, local government, and community organizations, we are a driving force in creating a safer and healthier environment where all residents can thrive.

Capital Health Institute for Urban Care

Public health challenges are part of every city across the country, often with challenges to pathways for making improvements. For more than a decade, Capital Health Institute for Urban Care has been working to identify new ways of tackling Trenton’s critical health, education, economic, and environmental challenges. With programs based on recommendations from local community health needs assessments and community health improvement plans, our Institute aims to deepen Capital Health’s connections to Trenton and make meaningful and lasting improvements for its residents.

The Trenton Neighborhood Initiative (TNI) addresses the social determinants that impact the health of Trenton residents, delivering solutions that complement the health care services Capital Health provides. TNI programs focus on four pillars that support home ownership, job training, family services, and digital equity:

Recognized by Lown Institute for Health Equity Initiatives

Capital Health Regional Medical Center (RMC) and Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell have received national recognition from the Lown Institute for racial inclusivity and social responsibility, earning top grades in key metrics such as health equity, patient safety, and community benefit. The Lown Institute, founded in 1973 by Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Bernard Lown (developer of the defibrillator and cardioverter), is an independent, nonpartisan organization that conducts research to help bridge the gap between existing public policy solutions and improved access to care for all Americans.

Nationally Recognized High Performing Hospitals for Maternity Care

U.S. News & World Report 2026 High Performing hospital for Maternity Care

Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell was named a 2026 High Performing hospital for Maternity Care by U.S. News & World Report. This is the highest award a hospital can earn as part of U.S. News’ Best Hospitals for Maternity Care annual study. Capital Health is one of 27 hospitals in New Jersey and the only hospital in the Greater Mercer County area to earn this recognition. This is the third consecutive year that Capital Health earned a place on the U.S. News High Performing Hospitals list for Maternity Care and the fourth time in five years since U.S. News published its first list of Best Hospitals for Maternity. U.S. News also recognized Capital Health in April 2024 for achieving excellent outcomes for cesarean sections and unexpected newborn complications among black patients.

Maternal and Infant Health Innovation Center

Capital Health is also one of three anchor tenants approved by the New Jersey Economic Development Authority to lead the Maternal and Infant Health Innovation Center (MIHIC) in Trenton. The three entities, including Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, and Trenton Health Team, will work collaboratively to provide services focused on addressing a myriad of issues around maternal and infant health in Trenton and across New Jersey. The MIHIC will serve as a hub for New Jersey’s stakeholders dedicated to eliminating racial disparities and advancing maternal health equity in the state.

Community Baby Showers

As part of Capital Health Maternity Services, our Community Baby Showers are hosted twice per year in Trenton to support expectant mothers and families with resources, connections, and care. With local leaders, health care providers, and community partners gathered in one place, these events help families get access to breastfeeding and postpartum support, health coverage for kids, and expert guidance to ensure growing families are ready for the journey ahead.

TeamBirth

TeamBirth facilitates collaboration among patients, families, nurses, physicians, midwives, and other team members to promote safe and dignified births. With a focus on communication to promote positive birth experiences, TeamBirth provides patient-centered equitable care that prioritizes the patient’s values, preferences, and goals in the care plan.


Capital Health’s Financial Assistance

The Capital Health Financial Assistance Policy/Program (FAP) exists to provide eligible patients, partially or fully discounted health care services provided by Capital Health. Patients seeking Financial Assistance must apply for the program. Plain language summaries of our FAP are available in English and 14 additional languages.
