Program Description
The Barrett’s Esophagus Program provides patients with access to physicians who are experts in diagnosing and treating Barrett’s esophagus and the complications of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Barrett’s esophagus is a pre-cancerous condition of the esophagus that can develop in patients with long-standing GERD from chronic acid exposure, which damages the lining of the esophagus. It is estimated that one in 200 patients with Barrett’s esophagus will develop esophageal cancer each year. Patients may have a more severe form of Barrett’s, where the abnormal lining also contains “dysplasia” (cells that may be on their way to turning into cancer). These patients are at an even higher risk for developing Barrett’s esophagus.

The good news is that we now have minimally-invasive treatments available at Capital Health to cure dysplasia and Barrett’s esophagus. Our expert physicians have advanced training in several of these technologies and techniques, which are not available at most community hospitals. They include radiofrequency ablation (BARRX), endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS).

State-Of-The-Art Endoscopic Technology and Treatments
Our interventional gastroenterologists utilize state-of-the-art endoscopic technology, which is often not available at community-level hospitals. All of our participating interventional gastroenterologists (aka, “therapeutic endoscopists”) have received advanced training beyond that of routine gastroenterology fellowship training in order to master these complex procedures. Most of these procedures provide a minimally invasive means for both diagnosing and treating complex gastrointestinal problems.
