Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) provides a non-invasive means to removing small tumors or pre-cancerous lesions of the digestive tract which arise from either the superficial lining (mucosa) or just beneath the surface of the normal lining. Usually, EMR is performed after an evaluation with endoscopic ultrasound (EUS). EMR, in skilled hands, often saves the patient from needing surgery.
Examples of pre-cancerous lesions that can be removed using EMR include:
- Nodule in Barrett’s esophagus
- Barrett’s esophagus with high grade dysplasia
- Carcinoid tumor
- Large polyps of the stomach, small intestine, or colon
- Early esophageal or gastric cancer
