Capital Health Receives Outstanding Achievement Award From American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer and Receives Accreditation With Gold Commendation

Award recognizes cancer programs that achieve excellence in providing highest quality care to cancer patients

Hopewell Twp, NJ – Capital Health announced today it has been awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award from American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer, in addition to its recent Accreditation with Gold Commendation. This is the highest level of accreditation available.

Capital Health is one of a select group of only 20 U.S. health care facilities, with an accredited cancer program to receive this national outstanding achievement award honor for surveys performed January 1 – June 30, 2015. The award acknowledges cancer programs that achieve excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients.

“More than 100 experts from across the country are part of the CoC, and they set the standards for all aspects of cancer management and care quality,” said Dr. Bernard Grossman, director of Medical Oncology and chair of the Capital Health Cancer Committee. “Their recognition of us as ‘outstanding’ speaks volumes about the level of care we provide and the exceptional commitment of our team from diagnostics and treatment, all the way through survivorship.”

“This achievement acknowledges the comprehensiveness of our oncology program; physician, nursing and staff leadership; and strong commitment to patient-centered care, all of which are important for an excellent cancer program,” said Rona Remstein, director of Oncology Services. “Patients want to know that they can receive quality care in a compassionate setting, and we walk this journey with them every day.”

The purpose of the Outstanding Achievement Award is to raise awareness of the importance of providing quality cancer care at health care institutions throughout the U.S. In addition, it is intended to:

  • Motivate other cancer programs to work toward improving their level of care.
  • Facilitate dialogue between award recipients and healthcare professionals at other cancer facilities for the purpose of sharing best practices.
  • Encourage honorees to serve as quality-care resources to other cancer programs.
  • Educate cancer patients on available quality-care options.

Capital Health’s cancer program was evaluated on 34 program standards categorized within one of four cancer program activity areas: cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical services, and quality improvement. The cancer program was further evaluated on seven commendation standards. To be eligible, all award recipients must have received commendation ratings in all seven commendation standards, in addition to receiving a compliance rating for each of the 27 other standards. This successful survey resulted in Capital Health receiving 3 year with Gold Commendation accreditation from the CoC.
