Capital Health is First Hospital in NJ Named a Center of Excellence for GYN Minimally Invasive Surgery

Demonstrates Commitment to Advanced Surgical Procedures for Women

Trenton, NJ - Capital Health today became the first hospital in New Jersey to achieve status as a GYN Center of Excellence from the American Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery.   Presently, only 28 other hospitals in the United States have met the stringent criteria to become a Center of Excellence.

“Becoming a GYN Center of Excellence for Minimally Invasive Surgery further demonstrates our commitment to offering our patients the latest in advanced medicine.  I congratulate Dr. Daniel Small for leading the effort to achieve this prestigious designation for Capital Health,” said Al Maghazehe, president and CEO of Capital Health.

Dr Daniel Small“The benefits of minimally invasive surgery for women are clear and convincing, such as smaller incisions, less blood loss, decreased scarring, fewer surgical complications, faster recovery and shorter hospital stay,” said Dr. Daniel Small of Lawrence OB/GYN, with offices in Lawrenceville and Hamilton, NJ and Yardley, Pa. “This designation tells patients that the physicians at Capital Health have met the high standards to become a GYN Center of Excellence.”

Dr. Small was recognized by AIMIS as a “physician champion” for his work in pioneering minimally invasive techniques in the Mercer-Bucks region.

Physicians at Capital Health perform a number of MIS procedures for women including hysterectomy and treatment for uterine fibroids and chronic pelvic pain, urinary incontinence, pelvic prolapse and endometriosis. These surgeries are generally accomplished with incisions less than a half-inch in diameter, and sometimes with the aid of the DaVinci surgical robot. Most patients are able to leave the hospital on the day of their procedure.

The American Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery (AIMIS) is the nation’s pre-eminent educator of advanced surgical techniques for women’s health specialists.  To become a Center of Excellence, Capital Health had to submit to AIMIS data about MIS surgical volumes and outcomes, meet AIMIS benchmarks and undergo both a clinical review and site visit.
