Emergency Care That's Just For Kids

If you’ve taken your child to the ER, does any of this sound familiar?

  • Long waiting times
  • Crowded waiting areas
  • Doctors and nurses who don’t know how to deal with kids

A trip to the emergency room with a child is never fun, but adding these stressors into it makes the experience even worse. For longer than anyone else in the region, Capital Health has offered a specialized Pediatric Emergency Department for children in Mercer and Bucks counties. Located at Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell, we’re raising expectations even higher about what a trip to the emergency room should be for parents and children.

There should only be pediatric doctors and nurses.

Our 16-bed Pediatric Emergency Department is completely separate from our adult emergency department, and only treats patients who are newborns through 17 years of age. Since these children only see pediatricians, our Pediatric Emergency Department only offers highly qualified, board certified pediatricians and pediatric trained nurses—available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

There should be a separate area that’s just for kids, too.

When you arrive at Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell, you’ll notice a separate glass-surrounded room with a large floor-to-ceiling mural, a wall-mounted flat screen TV, and small, child-sized furnishings. That’s our Pediatric Emergency Department waiting area, and yes, it’s separate from our Adult Emergency Department waiting area. So are the triage rooms where you’re evaluated upon arrival. When it’s time to see the pediatrician, our clinical areas are also separate from the Adult Emergency Department so that every room you enter is designed just for children and parents.
