For My Baby and Me - A Drug Treatment Program for Pregnant Women and New Mothers

Mother holding infantFor My Baby and Me (FMBAM) is a specialized, integrated opioid treatment program developed by Capital Health in collaboration with long-established partners from Catholic Charities Diocese of Trenton, HomeFront, Inc., the Rescue Mission of Trenton, and The Trenton Health Team. This program is designed to provide a comprehensive range of services to support opioid-dependent pregnant women and their infants. These services encompass substance use disorder treatment, prenatal and postpartum medical/obstetric care, sober living arrangements, intensive case management, and recovery support.

Additionally, the program offers a myriad of services aimed at addressing social determinants that would otherwise act as barriers to these women successfully obtaining treatment. These services include temporary housing, education support, employment readiness and training, food, clothing, and childcare to ensure a holistic approach to recovery and support. All services are delivered keeping in mind diversity, inclusion, equity, and cultural and linguistic competence. It is important to note that these services were not previously offered to pregnant women in Mercer County. FMBAM addresses a serious gap in opioid addiction care in the county and New Jersey. Since its inception in December 2017, FMBAM has actively engaged more than 200 participants.

The primary goals of the program include increasing substance abuse screening and correlated pregnancy testing among women of childbearing age, providing addiction treatment during and after pregnancy, facilitating sober living arrangements when needed, offering medical care for women and children, establishing a psychological support system, and delivering all necessary support services to prevent relapse, following an evidence-based model. Furthermore, the program aims to enhance the likelihood and incidence of long-term recovery for pregnant women and new mothers who have struggled with opioid use disorder, while also establishing and maintaining integrated service delivery among community partners. It is this all-inclusive approach and continuous support that fosters long-term recovery for the women enrolled and increases the potential of keeping families together.
