For Referring Physicians - Treatment Delivery

Click here for the latest results on how CyberKnife® is treating patients with prostate cancer at Capital Health.

The CyberKnife® System functions differently than conventional radiosurgery systems at every stage of the clinical process.

The CyberKnife® System's treatment planning capabilities are designed to support the clinician in determining the optimal plan for each patient.

The tools available to clinicians include some of the most advanced treatment planning technologies available today. The MultiPlan® Treatment Planning System and the InView® Image Fusion and Contouring Station combine to enable easy and quick design of dose optimization programs as well as sophisticated and convenient image fusion and contouring.

These tools enable clinicians to specially design the concentration of beams to the tumor, optimizing tumor ablation. Forward and inverse treatment planning are also options, allowing for dose optimization for individual patients based on the location of the tumor, minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue.

Tumor tracking

The CyberKnife® Robotic Radiosurgery System is the world's first commercially available radiosurgery system designed to treat tumors anywhere in the body with submillimeter accuracy. It uses a combination of image guidance technology and computer controlled robotics to continuously track, detect and correct for tumor and patient movements throughout the treatment. Because of its extreme precision, the CyberKnife® System does not require invasive head or body frames to immobilize the patient for tumor tracking.

During treatment, the CyberKnife® System correlates live radiographic images with pre-operative CT or MRI scans in real time to determine patient and tumor position repeatedly over the course of treatment. With the CyberKnife® System's revolutionary Xsight™ Spine Tracking System it is now possible to treat tumors in or near spinal structures without implanting radiographic markers known as fiducials.

The CyberKnife® System's Synchrony® Respiratory Tracking System technology allows patients to breathe normally throughout their treatment without breath-holding or gating techniques enabling the system to continuously track, detect and correct for tumor and patient movement throughout the treatment.

Treatment delivery

The CyberKnife® Robotic Radiosurgery System is the most clinically accurate robotic radiosurgery system in the world treating tumors anywhere in the body with submillimeter accuracy. The CyberKnife® System treats patients in single or fractionated (typically two to five) sessions by delivering multiple beams of precisely directed radiation that converge upon the tumor, minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. Clinicians also have the potential to target multiple tumors at different locations during a single treatment.

The CyberKnife® System is the only radiosurgery system with a compact 6-MV X-band linear accelerator and a multi-jointed manipulator that enables unlimited beam positions–the greatest flexibility of approach available in any radiosurgery system, providing increased access to tumors anywhere in the body.
