What We Treat

Retroperitoneal tumors are rare, but they can present significant clinical challenges when they occur because of their close relationship with a number of vital organs and structures, late presentation of symptoms, and difficult locations.

The retroperitoneum is an area located in the back of the abdominal cavity, behind the tissue (called the peritoneum) that lines the abdominal wall and covers most of the organs in the abdomen. The adrenal glands, aorta, kidneys, esophagus, ureters, pancreas, rectum, and parts of the stomach and colon are located in the retroperitoneum.

Our Center's mission is to provide a comprehensive, efficient, and team-focused approach while delivering highly personalized care. Your path to treatment begins with a comprehensive review of your current health records, including all available studies and biopsy results, after which Dr. Mayer determines which specialists are needed to address your specific needs. At your first office consultation, you will meet with your entire care team to learn about your personalized care plan. Your team may include a medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, colorectal surgeon, interventional radiologist, and hepato-pancreato-biliary surgeon. Additionally, support services such as genetic counselling, nutrition, clinical trial research, and others will be arranged as necessary.

Through a collaborative approach, the Center’s highly trained multidisciplinary team utilizes cutting-edge technology to diagnose and treat retroperitoneal tumors, working closely with you and your referring physician to provide the best possible care. A nurse navigator helps facilitate communication between you and your physicians, manage your appointments, answer any questions you may have and ease your fears along the way.
