Patient Responsibilites

Advance Directives

The State of New Jersey Statute NJSA 26: 2H-53 states that it is your right to accept or refuse medical treatment. Advance directives protect your rights if you become mentally or physically unable to express your wishes.

There are two types of advance directives—a living will and a durable power of attorney (proxy). Living wills are written instructions stating your wishes regarding healthcare. A durable power of attorney (proxy) is a written document that assigns a person of your choice as your healthcare representative to make decisions for you. Advance directives only become effective when you are unable to let your healthcare wishes be known due to a terminal illness or a permanent unconscious state. You may have a living will, durable power of attorney or a combination of both.

Discuss your wishes with your family and physician. Planning ahead for your healthcare protects your rights. For more information, please call the Patient Advocate at ext. 6336 (Capital Health Regional Medical Center) or ext. 4280 (Mercer Campus).

Bio-Ethics Committee

Capital Health has a Bio-Ethics Committee to discuss ethical issues and concerns you may have about your healthcare. Your nurse will assist you if you need help. For more information, please call the Patient Advocate at ext. 6336 (Capital Health Regional Medical Center) or ext. 4280 (Mercer Campus).

Answer Questions Fully

You have the responsibility to give your physician and other health system personnel all the information needed to plan your healthcare effectively. Please remember that the information is requested to help plan appropriate care. This is not meant to embarrass you, and we ask for your help.

Comply With Instructions

You and your family have the responsibility for following the treatment plan. You are asked to tell the physician or nurse if you do not understand your diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, or instructions.

Be Considerate of Others

Please be thoughtful of other patients, and see that your visitors are also thoughtful. Noise can be very disturbing when one is ill, so please do not play your television or radio loudly, talk on the phone late at night, and remind your visitors of the need for quiet.

Seek Further Information and Guidance

No list of guidelines can fully describe relationships between you and your physician, the health system and our staff. The guidelines are recommendations to foster a spirit of mutual trust, cooperation and respect.

Help Prevent Falls

Make sure your call button is near you. Do not grab onto medical equipment. Call your nurse for help. Leave your bed low and keep belongings within reach. Wear non-skid shoes or slippers and avoid long robes.

Pain Management

As a patient, you can expect to have pain assessed on an initial evaluation, regularly thereafter and whenever you report pain. Our concerned staff is committed to pain management and believes and responds quickly to reports of pain. We offer information about pain and pain relief measures, as well as state-of-the-art pain management.

As a patient, please help your physicians and nurses assess your pain by asking them what to expect regarding pain and pain management. Discuss pain relief options with your physicians and nurses, and work with them to develop a pain management plan. Ask for pain relief when pain first begins. Tell your physicians or nurses if your pain is not relieved, and any concerns you may have about taking pain medication.

Dentures/Glasses

Please be careful not to place your dentures and/or glasses on food trays or on the bed. You can obtain denture cups from the nursing staff, if needed.

Valuable or Lost Items

Patients are asked not to bring or wear items of financial or emotional value to the health system. If you do bring such an item, it should be put in the safe located in the Security Office. You will be given a written receipt for all items, which must be shown when you withdraw them. The health system does not accept responsibility for items of value unless they are deposited in the safe. If you lose something, please notify your nurse right away and we will make every effort to help you find it. To inquire about lost articles, call the Security Office at ext. 6100 (Capital Health Regional Medical Center) or ext. 4100 (Mercer Campus).
