BILL SWORD’ S STORY:

I LIVED IN PRINCETON ALL MY LIFE, but I never really knew much about Capital Health System in Trenton. It wasn’t a hospital that my wife, Martha, and I had ever used. Then one night, I experienced life threatening wounds, requiring immediate assistance. The EMT team rushed me to Capital Health at Fuld Trauma Center. Teams of doctors worked on me through the early morning hours. They moved fast. Made the right decisions. Saved my life. Everyday I’m thankful I was rushed to Capital Health’s trauma center instead of somewhere else. I not only owe them my thanks, I owe them my life.” Our world class trauma center is just one of many reasons to know about Capital Health System. RUSSELL RICE’S STORY:

I BEAT PROSTATE CANCER ONCE, and that was tough enough. When I was diagnosed with it again, I was emotionally devastated. Fortunately, this time I was referred to Capital Health System’s Radiation Oncology Department in Trenton. The initial meeting with my doctor went great, and helped put my wife, Donna, and me at ease. The more contact I had with the staff who administered the treatments, the more my fears subsided, and my hope grew. They treated me like a human being rather than some sick cancer person, and were genuinely concerned about me. It wasn’t only the radiation treatments at Capital Health that pulled me through. It was the compassion.” Our compassionate cancer care is just one of many reasons to know about Capital Health System, a member of the University of Pennsylvania Cancer Network. LYNN HAYNES' STORY

I HAD A HIGH-RISK PREGNANCY. BUT THANKS TO CAPITAL HEALTH I NOW HAVE TWO BEAUTIFUL GIRLS.
When my husband, Dennis, and I found out we were having twins, we were ecstatic. At first, there were no complications. But at 26-1/2 weeks, I went into labor. And was terrified. Fortunately my doctor delivered my babies at Capital Health. At birth, they weighed less than two pounds each, and were immediately transferred to the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. For months, the neonatologists and nurses kept up our spirits as they helped our girls fight to survive. They were like angels. Today Aerin and Ashley are healthy and happy. We have Capital Health to thank for saving their lives. It may not have been a fairy tale delivery. But thanks to them, it’s been a fairy tale ending.- Lynn Haynes

From the moment the doctors and nurses began working on me I knew that I was in good hands and would be well again. I have never experienced care like I had at CHS. There wasn’t one person that didn’t go above and beyond during my stay. The doctors put me back together again, the nurses returned my life to me, and the physical and occupational therapists showed me how to grasp it and make something of it once more,” Being taken to the CHS Regional Trauma Center was a great benefit to me and my family. In June, my oldest child got married - so just think what I would have missed if things had turned out differently. More…

I was upset. A previous surgery left me with an incision scar the whole length of my abdomen. I was laid-up for weeks of recovery. I was not looking forward to another surgical procedure of that caliber. Capital Health System surgeons Louis D’Amelio, MD, FASC, and Dominick Eboli, MD, FASC, told me could have minimally invasive surgery to repair my hernias with a fraction of the recovery time. They made me a new, pain-free man! I would recommend this procedure to anyone suffering from hernias. More…

I knew I had to have something done, but I kept putting off the inevitable because I did not want to have surgery. But after developing anemia as a result of the constant bleeding, I knew the time had come to address my problem. Daniel Small, MD, and obstetrician/gynecologist at Capital Health System offered me a great alternative to a traditional hysterectomy. Because of the clear advantages – less time in the hospital, less pain and a quicker recovery time – I finally scheduled the surgery I had been putting off for years. And, since the surgery, I am no longer anemic. More…

After hitting his head, Tiernan cried for about 20 minutes, but then seemed to be fine for hours after the initial accident, laughing and playing. I called his pediatrician and was told not to let him sleep any longer than his usual nap time, which is two hours. When my husband and I could not fully wake him from his nap, we called 911. The paramedics who responded to our call made the decision to bring him to Fuld because he had suffered a trauma. We are grateful Tiernan was brought to Fuld’s Trauma Center. The knowledgeable medical team quickly determined his status and immediately operated, coming together and performing the miracle of saving our son’s life. We think of you as heroes, our personal angels. And thank you for letting us start our days with a big smile from our baby boy. More…

After walking into the building, I began to feel my vision fading right as I was coming up to my office. That was the last thing I remember before waking up in a hospital bed in the Intensive Care Unit. I went into ventricular defibrillation, meaning that my heart had stopped beating. After 30 minutes of CPR and numerous shocks to my heart – all performed right in the hallway – the doctors and nurses were finally able to get a rhythm and blood pressure, and bring me back to life. I had no recollection of the ordeal, and was quite surprised to awaken in a hospital bed on a ventilator, especially since I was not experiencing any symptoms of coronary disease. It was a miracle or something that drove me to go into CHS that day. I can never thank my co-workers enough for saving my life. More…
Murali Vasudevan, Lawrenceville, NJ, and CHS Employee

Because I was a high risk pregnancy, I wanted to be at a hospital with a NICU and CHS had it all. After being on bed rest for three weeks, I went into labor on the 25th week of her pregnancy. We were happy with the NICU at Mercer. We have a positive feeling here and are connected with the physicians and nurses. They have been very honest and straightforward with us - telling us the good with the bad. The NICU staff works very long hours in very stressful conditions, and they deserve much more credit than they receive. They were always there giving us the information we needed and included us as active participants in the healthcare team. We changed diapers, fed and held Jordayn. The staff taught us how to be parents and let Jordayn feel loved. If it weren’t for the medical advances and technologies that are currently available, I’m not sure Jordayn would be here today, doing so well. More…
