The Weight-control Information Network, or WIN (an information service of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases), defines bariatric surgery as an operation that promotes weight loss and reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes by restricting food intake and, in some cases, interrupts the digestive process to prevent the absorption of some calories and nutrients.
Recent studies reported by the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery show that bariatric procedures help improve or resolve more than 40 obesity-related diseases and conditions, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, certain cancers, sleep apnea, GERD (reflux disease), high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea and joint problems.
At Capital Health Surgical Group, Dr. Jooyeun Chung is a fellowship trained bariatric surgeon who specializes in diagnosis and treatment of metabolic disorders with a focus on minimally invasive gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, placement of lap band and other surgical procedures with potential to successfully affect obesity and diabetes.
