Center for Digestive Health Tackles Esophagus Conditions

Barrett’s esophagus is a pre-cancerous condition that affects up to 3.5 million adults in the U.S. The condition commonly goes undiagnosed and can lead to esophageal cancer, making it one of the more dangerous conditions that affect the digestive system.

The most common risk factor for Barrett’s is chronic acid reflux, which damages the lining of the esophagus. Some may have a more severe form of Barrett’s where the lining also contains dysplasia (cells that are turning into cancer).

Jason Rogart“Studies show that treating the dysplasia associated with Barrett’s esophagus can reduce and even eliminate the progression to cancer. Also, some esophageal cancers, when caught early, can even be cured endoscopically, without the need for surgery,” said Dr. Jason Rogart, director of Interventional Gastroenterology and Therapeutic Endoscopy at Capital Health.

Experts at the Capital Health Center for Digestive Health collaborate to provide such options as radiofrequency ablation (RFA), endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), endoscopic ultrasound, and minimally invasive surgery, all at Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell.
