Uniquely Offers 3-D Imaging for Patients in Region
Trenton, NJ – Capital Health has announced that another respected Philadelphia surgeon has joined its team, this time offering advanced plastic surgery services including both cosmetic and reconstructive procedures. Dr. Gary A. Tuma has joined the medical staff at Capital Health and launched Plastic Surgery Associates of NJ
. Dr. Tuma was previously affiliated with Jefferson Plastic Surgery in Philadelphia where he was on staff at Jefferson University Hospital, Albert Einstein Medical Center, and Methodist Hospital.
Dr. Tuma who is board certified both in general and plastic surgery, received his bachelor’s degree from Boston College and went on to obtain his medical degree at Jefferson Medical College. He then completed his residency at Jefferson University Hospital, followed by a research fellowship in plastic surgery at the University of Pennsylvania, and a subsequent plastic surgery residency at the prestigious Emory University Hospital where many current breast reconstruction approaches were first developed.
Dr. Tuma will be using the Vectra® X3 imaging system
which will provide the only opportunity for Vectra 3-D imaging for patients in central and southern New Jersey. The Vectra system enables patients to get a realistic look at what they can accomplish with surgery. Using a picture taken by the Vectra system of the patient, Dr. Tuma can then show individual patients what they will look like with different procedure options.
“At Capital Health our motto is Minds Advancing Medicine,” said Al Maghazehe, president and CEO, Capital Health. “With the addition of Dr. Tuma, patients in our area are again being given the opportunity to receive the type of care they expect from an academic medical center in the city, right here, conveniently in their backyards. The addition of Dr. Tuma builds on the significant foundation of plastic surgery capabilities at Capital Health.”
“When I spoke to the leadership at Capital Health about joining the hospital system, I knew it was an opportunity to be a part of something very big,” said Dr. Tuma. “The growth of this hospital system and the potential to build a high-level plastic surgery program alongside the opening of the new state of the art hospital in Hopewell, made the move very appealing. For patients it means that instead of driving into Philadelphia or New York, they can stay close to home and still receive really phenomenal care.”
Providing comprehensive options for cosmetic surgery procedures, such as breast augmentation, facial surgical procedures and body procedures such as liposuction, Dr. Tuma also has extensive experience in reconstructive procedures for a wide variety of conditions. As part of the Capital Health team, Dr. Tuma will do reconstructive surgery for trauma patients brought into the Bristol-Myers Squibb Trauma Center at Capital Health Regional Medical Center, as well as for neurosurgical patients who require reconstruction following surgical interventions. Dr. Tuma also performs a variety of breast reconstruction options for women who have lost a breast, or breasts, to cancer, and also has extensive experience with hernia and abdominal wall reconstruction, and orthopaedic reconstruction.
In addition to providing outstanding clinical care to his patients, Dr. Tuma has been the recipient of various research grants and has published numerous articles and book chapters on breast and burn reconstruction, soft tissue reconstruction and wound reconstruction.
