Dual-Board Certified Physician Joins Capital Health to Lead New Surgical ICU in Hopewell

Surgical ICU will be the first of its kind in the Mercer/Bucks region

Dr. Steven Johnson has joined the medical staff at Capital Health as director of Multi-Specialty Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. Dr. Johnson joins Dr. Francis Rosato as part of the Advanced Surgical Associates of New Jersey practice and will serve as director of the new Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) that will be part of the new Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell.

The Surgical ICU serves an important role in the hospital setting as the admitting unit for surgical patients who are critically ill and/or injured. Many of these patients will have an acute or imminent need for surgical intervention In addition, patients who require surgery but have chronic medical conditions or comorbidities such as heart disease, diabetes, hypertension or a history of massive bleeding would need a hospital with a Surgical ICU to ensure an advanced level of 24/7 observation before, during and after their procedure. Capital Health’s new Surgical ICU at Hopewell will be the first of its kind at any hospital in the greater Mercer/Bucks region. The advantage to a specialized unit such as this one is that a surgeon trained in critical care surgery would staff it at all times. Perioperative services would be offered to Urology, Orthopedics, ENT, Plastics, General Surgery, OB/GYN and Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Trauma, and Endocrine Surgery, among others.

“Physicians at our hospitals are offering treatment options beyond what was previously available anywhere else in our region, which means we are seeing the most complex cases in the region brought to our hospitals. Because of the advanced level of work being done by the surgeons on our medical staff, we saw a need for both a specialized ICU and a medical director with advanced expertise in general surgery and surgical critical care with the experience to work with our multidisciplinary team of specialists in general surgery, anesthesia, emergency medicine, and other areas to build this new service for patients at our new hospital in Hopewell,” said Dr. Robert Remstein, vice president of Medical Affairs, Capital Health.

“Because of his experience and training, the addition of Dr. Johnson and our Surgical ICU will be an invaluable asset to our physicians, staff and most importantly, our patients, across the board. As you can imagine, a physician in this role must be highly skilled in various areas of surgery in order to collaboratively manage these cases with many different specialists, nurses and other healthcare professionals in the ICU. Dr. Johnson has a broad range of experience in general and trauma surgery settings and an extensive background in both research and practice that will benefit our physicians and patient outcomes.”

Dr. Johnson joins Capital Health from Christiana Care Health System in Newark, DE. He is board certified in both general surgery and surgical critical care. He received his medical degree from the Jefferson Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Johnson then completed his internship and residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, and went on to the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center (University of Maryland Medical Systems) in Baltimore, MD to complete his fellowship in trauma and surgical critical care.

Among his many awards and honors, Dr. Johnson received a commendation from the Shock Trauma Center with a Hero’s Award in 2003, saving the life of a police officer shot in the line of duty. He was named Trauma Attending Surgeon of the Year in 2005 and 2010 by Christiana Hospital, as well as Physician Ambassador for the Surgical ICU. Dr. Johnson also received a Delaware Haitian Disaster Medical Relief Team Commendation from the Rotary Club International and Senator Tom Carper of Delaware.

“I am excited to join such an accomplished staff of physicians, who are devoted to transforming the way healthcare is delivered in the central New Jersey region,” Dr. Johnson said. “In addition to developing a new Surgical ICU, Capital Health is becoming a game-changer with its development of specialized programs in the fields of neurosciences, trauma, maternity, digestive health, and advanced orthopaedics and plastic surgery. It is only natural that general surgery and its subspecialities continue to develop and expand by implementing programs that offer more optimal, complex and all-encompassing options for the diagnosis and treatment of surgical diseases. We must clearly set our goals high for patient safety, improved outcomes and future success together. With the brand-new hospital in Hopewell almost ready to open and the extensive renovations on the verge of completion at Capital Health Regional Medical Center, I look forward to working as a part of the leadership team at Capital Health”
