Capital Health Expands Access to Primary Care for Trenton Residents
May 11, 2011
Trenton, NJ – Capital Health announced today a significant expansion in access to primary care for City residents at its Family Health Center at 433 Bellevue Avenue, in Trenton with the addition of 17 physicians beginning in July. At that time, the Center will also offer additional office hours.
“It is well known by medical professionals that the best healthcare for patients is regular, ongoing preventive care with a primary care doctor. Unfortunately, for those without health insurance or those with minimal coverage, the cost of such care is prohibitive and they have to rely on emergency rooms for treatment when they become ill,” said Robert Remstein, D.O., vice president for Medical Affairs.
“By increasing the number of doctors available to offer care to these patients, we are hopeful that they will soon see the benefits of routine care, which will reduce the need to be seen on an emergent basis,” Remstein added.
The shortage of primary care physicians was well documented in a report commissioned by the City of Trenton several years ago. Since that time, Capital Health has worked with the city, St. Francis Medical Center, Henry J. Austin Health Center and the N.J. Department of Health and Senior Services to develop a long-term plan to address the shortage. As part of the larger Trenton Health Team , Capital Health’s addition of 17 physicians in the city will mean that thousands more uninsured and underinsured patients will be able to establish “medical homes” with a doctor and receive ongoing care.
According to Remstein, the 17 physicians are in Capital Health’s Family Medicine residency program, which will be moved from its present location in Lawrenceville to the Family Health Center in Trenton. The 12 residents are physicians who have chosen to specialize in the practice of Family Medicine by completing a three-year training program. The residents are under the direct supervision of 5 physicians who are board certified in Family Medicine and hold faculty positions in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
The family medicine office on Bellevue Avenue supplements the comprehensive care currently provided in the adult internal medicine, pediatric and prenatal clinics of Capital.
