Capital Health’s NICU is First in Nation to Earn Disease-Specific Care Certification

February 16, 2010

Capital Health was recently recognized as the first hospital in the country to receive Disease-Specific Care Certification in Respiratory Distress Syndrome in Preterm Infants by The Joint Commission for its level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

This recognition means high-risk or medically fragile babies can rely on receiving the highest level of care at Capital Health.

“To receive this recognition validates Capital Health’s ongoing commitment to incorporating quality initiatives and safe patient practices into all aspects of the care we provide,” said Al Maghazehe, CEO and president of Capital Health. “Being the first and only hospital in the country to earn this certification for our neonatal services is especially gratifying and should provide additional peace of mind to the thousands of parents who choose Capital Health for their care.”

During a recent survey, The Joint Commission, an independent, national accrediting agency performed evaluations using stringent criteria. The results of the study earned Capital Health a two-year disease-specific care certification.

Certification requirements addressed three areas: • Compliance with consensus-based national standards and safety goals, • Effective use of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care, and • An organized approach to performance measurement and improvement activities.

Capital Health is the regional perinatal center and offers the only level III neonatal program—the highest level of care available for high-risk pregnancies and medically fragile infants—in Mercer County. The NICU has been named a center of excellence consistently for respiratory outcomes by the Vermont Oxford Neonatal Network (VONN), a neonatal network and multinational database of which Capital Health is one of 300 participating NICUs. The VONN has requested that the Capital Health NICU serve as a benchmarking center for particular areas of neonatal management, designating the NICU as a center for other facilities to use as a model.
