Lung Cancers Screening and Treatment

Treatment of Lung Cancer with CyberKnife

At Capital Health, we are proud to offer state-of-the-art CyberKnife technology for lung cancer treatment. These treatments are typically performed on an outpatient basis in one to five days, requiring no overnight hospital stays. Additionally, most of our patients have experienced minimal to no side effects, with no recovery time.

Unlike the brain and prostate, the challenge that doctors face when treating tumors in the lung is that these tumors move as the patient breathes. The CyberKnife System uses the Synchrony® Respiratory Tracking System to track tumor motion as patients breathe normally, and adjusts the radiation beam accordingly. The Synchrony System correlates the rise and fall of the chest with the actual location of the tumor in X-ray images. As a result, during CyberKnife treatment, patients can lie comfortably and breathe normally without any frames, and are not asked to hold their breath or perform any complex breathing maneuvers. The Synchrony System can track moving targets with an accuracy of one millimeter or better, which allows clinicians to deliver radiation precisely to the tumor and limit exposure to healthy surrounding tissue.

The CyberKnife System has the ability to identify and clearly visualize the tumor itself within the chest and track the tumor as the patient breathes normally. In a few cases, tumors may require the placement of fiducials within the lung to help the CyberKnife System pinpoint the tumor’s exact location. In that case, the patient will be scheduled for a short outpatient procedure beforehand.

Lung Cancer CyberKnife Treatment:

When it is time for treatment, the patient will be asked to put on a vest and lie on a custom-made body cradle. The vest is custom-designed with tracking markers that allow for the patient to be quickly setup at each visit. This is especially helpful for multi-fraction treatments where the patient returns for subsequent treatments. The radiation therapist will ensure the vest is properly adjusted and that you are positioned correctly on the treatment couch.

As your treatment begins, the location of the lung tumor will be tracked and detected continually as you breathe normally. The medical team will be watching you every step of the way as the CyberKnife tracks the lung’s movement and safely and precisely delivers radiation.

The CyberKnife System’s computer-controlled robot will move around your body to various locations from which it will deliver radiation. At each position, the robot will stop. Special software will then determine precisely where the radiation should be delivered by correlating breathing motion with the tumor. Nothing will be required of the patient during treatment, except to relax and lie as still as possible.

Once treatment is complete, most patients quickly return to their daily routines with little interruption to their normal activities. If treatment is being delivered in stages, you will need to return for additional treatments over the next several days as determined by your doctors.
