About Emil Matarese, MD

Dr. Matarese is director of the Concussion Program at Capital Health’s Capital Institute for Neurosciences. In addition to overseeing the program at the Institute, Dr. Matarese personally educates physicians, school nurses, athletic trainers and members of the community on the importance of screening, preventing, managing and treating concussions.

Dr. Matarese received his medical degree from The College of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ. He completed his post-graduate education from University Hospital, College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and Mt. Sinai Hospital. Dr. Matarese is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and the National Board of Medical Examiners.

Dr. Matarese is a highly respected neurologist, and he has collaborated with internationally recognized researchers in the field of traumatic brain injury to heighten awareness of emerging data for possible long-term consequences from concussion. He also promotes local concussion research.

Dr. Matarese is a member of the Executive Board for the Brain Injury Alliance of NJ (BIANJ), is a member of the Concussion in Sports Steering Committee BIANJ, and serves as a neurologic advisor for the group.

Dr. Matarese has coordinated neurological care of concussions as the neurologist for multiple high schools in Bucks, Mercer and Hunterdon counties, and is currently working to bring comprehensive concussion programs to schools throughout the region.

Dr. Matarese also sits on the Board of Directors for the Southeast Region chapter of the American Stroke Association, for which he also serves as a National Spokesperson for the “Power to End Stroke Program.” Dr. Matarese received the Delaware Valley Stroke Council’s Lifetime Achievement award as Stroke Physician of the year in 2010. He also received the Power Ambassador award for 2011 from the American Stroke Association Power to End Stroke. Dr. Matarese also received the NAACP Community Service Award for Stroke Awareness Program in 2007 and was named one of Philadelphia magazine’s Top DoctorsTM in 2019 and 2020 for Neurology.
