Medical Director, The Bristol-Myers Squibb Trauma Center at Capital Health Regional Medical Center
Dr. Louis F. D’Amelio oversaw the center’s highly successful re-verification by the American College of Surgeons in 2010. Capital Health’s trauma center has been a formally designated regional resource serving six counties in New Jersey and Pennsylvania since 1998. In recognition of its history of service to the region, the center was awarded a five-year, $5 million grant from the Bristol–Myers Squibb Foundation in 2010.
Prior to his arrival at Capital Health in 1999, Dr. D’Amelio was associate director of the Level I Trauma Center at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, N.J. He graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree from Pennsylvania State University. He received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia after being named to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society in his junior year. He completed a NIH Summer Medical Student Fellowship in clinical pharmacology at Thomas Jefferson University as well as a trauma research fellowship at Lehigh Valley Hospital Center, Allentown, Pa. He completed his residency in general surgery at Pennsylvania State University, Hershey, Pa.
Dr. D’Amelio is board certified in both surgery and critical care by the American Board of Surgery. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of a number of academic societies in surgery, including the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma and the Society of Critical Care Medicine. He is the author of numerous papers and book chapters covering a variety of topics in trauma, critical care, and surgical education.
As a clinical educator, Dr. D’Amelio has served as an instructor in general surgery at Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. He has also been assistant professor of surgery, associate professor of surgery and currently holds an appointment as a clinical associate professor of surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) – Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, New Brunswick, N.J and clinical associate professor of surgery at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine.
He has received numerous awards as both a physician and educator including Outstanding Attending Physician – Teaching Award from UMDNJ – Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Clinical Teacher of the Year from the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, and has been annually named as one of America’s Top Surgeons by the Consumer’s Research Council of America since 2002. Dr. D’Amelio heads Capital Surgical Associates and maintains an active clinical practice of general surgery, trauma, and surgical critical care.
Dr. D’Amelio serves on numerous hospital, state, and national committees related to trauma care and patient safety. He serves as a national trauma accreditation surveyor for the American College of Surgeons and chairs the professional practice committee at Capital Health.
He is married to Sandra Lynne Krebs and lives in Belle Mead, NJ. They have three children: Nicholas, Perry and Catherine.
